How to Choose a King Size Mattress

So you’ve done the math. You’ve checked your bedroom, the hallways and the stairs and found that all systems are going for accommodating and getting a king sized mattress in your home. And now the fun part begins- choosing the right mattress for you! How do you do that? There are a few things to consider in choosing the right one for you. Make sure to take your time and go over all your needs because you aren’t just investing in a mattress, but in a good night’s sleep.

The Rundown of Mattress Materials

What’s in a mattress? Well, these days it’s more than just foam. Here is a rundown of the types of materials that make up our mattresses these days:

  • Innerspring Mattress

This is still the most widely used type. The support it gives your body is through a system of coil springs, each coil being individually enclosed. This ensures a longer life to the mattress from regular wear and tear and prevents the coils from popping out of the mattress and jabbing you. Over the coils are different materials added for comfort such as memory foam or latex. These mattresses come in many degrees of firmness and are comfortable for almost everyone. Steer clear of the cheapest innerspring mattresses as there may not be enough coils to support your body weight aptly and what you save on your mattress may cost you in chiropractor bills.

  • Latex Mattresses

These mattresses are made from either natural or synthetic latex. They provide firm, uniform support all throughout the mattress. If you’re not a fan of firm mattresses, move on to another kind.

These are the newer kids on the block. They have the reputation of being space age and high tech, moulding and contouring with your body. They are made from layers of different densities of foam and as you move around and shift when you sleep, the mattress adjust accordingly with your movements and keeps you comfortable by relieving pressure points. Memory foam also absorbs movement so it is a good choice if you are a light sleeper and have a partner who moves around a lot.  One down side may be that since memory foam is temperature sensitive, allowing it to mould and soften with your weight, it can cause some people to feel warmer than usual when they sleep on it.

  • Air Mattresses

We aren’t talking about the ones you bust out and inflate up for that extra guest that is staying the night. These are the high end ones that use air chambers in place of coils, with a foam layer on top of them. And since the chambers can be adjusted for firmness, this is a great option if you and your partner have a difference of opinion when it comes to the firmness of your bed. You get to have your side as firm or as plush as you like.

Hitting the Sack

Now, all this talk of this material or that can only help you so much when it comes to deciding what mattress to go with. Even getting feedback from friends and even reading reviews can only give you an idea of the mattress. Considering that most people spend up to a third of their lives in bed, it better be a great bed to give you the best night of sleep you can get. So how do you choose one? Head to the mattress shop and start testing them out. How do you do this?
